Rogers Park, IL, Website
Rogers Park, Illinois. In the far northwest corner of the city, Rogers Park
is lined on the east by the Lake Michigan shoreline. Rogers park is bordered
by Calvary Cemetery (which is in Evanston) on the north, Devon on the south,
the lake on the east and Ridge on the west.
In 1894 a fire destroyed downtown Rogers Park. Loyola University's campus opened
here in 1909, after changing its name from St. Ignatius College and moving
north from Roosevelt Rd. Mundelein College, at the bend in Sheridan Rd. and
the lake, was founded in 1930. Both are in Rogers Park's southeast corner.
Rogers Park has been home to several strong Jewish, Catholic and Protestant
congregations. In the 1970s, many lakefront high-rise apartments went condo.
Prior to their conversions, 85 percent of the residents lived in rental apartments.
Mixed income homes and condos are available in Rogers Park. It also hosts a
variety of restaurants of different cultures.
